We will forever be the MySpace generation, the facebook generation, the Twitter generation; the generation who were unable to talk to each other without the mediation of the Internet.
I, for one, want no part in this attempt at connected isolation. We are all culprits: we broadcast our thoughts, we self censor, we deliberately label ourselves. We are trying, however unconsciously, to be responsible for what is found when we are googled.
We are simultaneously amazing and terrible at communicating, favouring a global sense of community over the small reaches of our location. We cannot be content to be, to hear, feel, see, smell. We must record, document, follow, check, constantly. We are explorers of an intangible realm.
Whether this be due to geographical isolation, or to emotional isolation, or to a learned inability to connect with people around you.
Physical presence and mental presence are both necessary for a legitimate, human, real time, real life connection.
We are all guilty. Put down your Internet enabled technology. Listen.
